Hyderabad: The central government’s Energy Ministry announced the draft consumer rights rules for 2021. According to the draft, it will be imperative for DISCOMS to ensure an uninterrupted 24-hour supply of electricity in the metro and other major cities in the country. In the event of a power cut, DISCOMS will be penalized.
The Department of Energy has also introduced new guidelines for the use of diesel generators due to increasing pollution in large cities.
The discoms will ensure an uninterrupted supply of electricity in major cities. The Electricity Regulatory Commission (ERC) will review the operation of DISCOMS and any power outages.
The project also stipulated the need to provide basic facilities to DISCOMS to enable it to ensure an uninterrupted power supply.
The ERC will also authorize DISCOMS to increase the electricity tariff. It will also impose a penalty on DISCOMS in the event of a power failure.
Currently, diesel generators are used for electrical back-up. According to the draft guidelines, diesel generators should be turned into battery-powered generators for a clean environment.
The Energy Ministry’s plan also stipulated the need to provide an electrical connection to construction sites within 48 hours.
