Smart launches 5G autonomous shopping network in Makati

SMART Communications, Inc., the wireless arm of PLDT, Inc., has launched its 5G (fifth generation) standalone commercial sites in Makati City, its general manager said.

“With the first batch of our 5G SA sites now fully operational, we are starting to see the true capabilities of 5G that will play a critical role in advancing IoT (Internet of Things), healthcare and cities. smart, ”PLDT and Smart Communications President and CEO Alfredo S. Panlilio said in a statement over the weekend.

The company said that with autonomous 5G (SA), it may soon offer Voice over New Radio (VoNR), or a calling service that makes full use of the 5G SA network, as well as network slicing capabilities.

“Smart made its first successful VoNR call as early as June of this year at the Technolab in the Smart Tower in Makati City,” he noted.

5G SA offers lightning-fast response times and faster access to higher data rates.

The faster connectivity enabled by 5G SA will help prepare the telecommunications network for the future, Smart said.

It should also create new business opportunities and enable new services for consumers.

“Customers will be able to project everything onto any surface or use augmented reality (AR) glasses to overlay images, videos and information right in front of them. By adding holographic projectors, they will be able to bring people, objects and even pets right next to them, ”the company said.

In August 2019, Smart made the first standalone 5G video call (5G SA) – or a connection relying solely on “pure 5G” for data transmission – to Southeast Asia using Nokia.

“5G SA… enables industrial automation, deployment of autonomous mobile robotics, secure remote crane operations, rapid response in games and interactive video streaming, among others. We are creating opportunities for Filipino businesses to compete on the global stage, ”said Mario G. Tamayo, chief technology officer at PLDT and Smart.
