insurer finds a new home on the main street of Oneonta | Economic news

For Joel Perkosky, insurance is about helping people. Perkosky launched Alpha & Omega Insurance Agency in 2019.

The 33-year-old Gilbertsville resident has moved from his space at 297 Main Street, Oneonta to 490 Main Street, also in Oneonta, with a grand reopening slated for October 12.

“I was at Oneonta for two years and I… opened in October 2019,” he said. “I was offered the opportunity to have this space at 490 Main Street and it’s in a more visible and accessible location.”

Perkosky, from Pennsylvania, said that while he had embarked on a musical path, the confidence gave him peace of mind. Alpha & Omega, he said, offers “everything when it comes to insurance: personal and business insurance of all types; auto and owner; life and health insurance, including Medicare-type products; and some limited financial services.

“There is a saying in the industry, ‘You don’t choose insurance, insurance chooses you,” he said. “I actually got a music degree from Mansfield University in Pennsylvania because I wanted to be a music teacher. I realized that the education market was very poor and that I had been dating my wife for four or five years and did not want to find a job where I was not sure. I realized I had a talent for sales and marketing… then I got a call from a family friend (working) at a State Farm agency. He said, “We are looking for agents who are good with people and who care about people. I was looking to grow taller, so I said, “Let’s try and give it a whirl. “

Perkosky said that between State Farm and his subsequent job with Farmers’ Insurance, he gained six years of experience in the industry, halfway realizing that he “wanted to become self-employed … and not have to say no. to people, but help anyone who walked through the door. “

Perkosky said Oneonta’s family ties and charm made Otsego County the perfect place to start.

“My wife was teaching for BOCES in Otsego County… about four years and I was trying to open my own agency at the time in the Binghamton area and it just didn’t work,” he said. he declares. “We arrived here in July 2019, looking for office space, and I fell in love with the city. Oneonta is a very picturesque university town.

Perkosky said the breadth of its services has generated a diverse customer base.

“I deal with all kinds of clients, from those with low median income to high median income,” he said. “I handle pretty much everyone in this regard, but geographically I have clients as far south as… Florida and upstate the Adirondacks, but the majority of my business is are located in upstate New York and northeastern Pennsylvania. “

And customers, he said, are enjoying Alpha & Omega’s new office space.

“The customers who have come so far have really liked the space and the parking is better,” he said. “Now that I have my own parking lot, people are excited about it. I love that I gained an additional 200 square feet of space and it’s street level, with storefront visibility.

Perksosky said that after creating the new space, he hopes to expand.

“At the moment I am the sole proprietor, operating as a DBA and eventually I would like to develop and create an LLC for the business and bring in other insurance agents and have them work at Oneonta. , or otherwise. ”he said. “I would like to bring in agents who can work with me and grow the business and eventually I will look to acquire other small agencies like mine. “

And while it’s chance that brought him into the business, Perkosky said, it’s the human connection that keeps him in place.

“What keeps me coming back are the people,” he said. “At the end of the day, everyone needs some sort of insurance – whether they drive a car or live in a house, to some level their life needs insurance – and you meet so many interesting and interesting people. different than, for me, that is what is worth it. There is no greater satisfaction than coming to see me saying to myself: “I am trying to get insurance and no one can help me. , what can you do? ”Then I can sit back and roll up my sleeves… and we understand it and realize it. I can help people when they need it so, for me, these are the relationships that I make and interviews with people. There is no such thing.
