FG inaugurates an implementation committee on internal security, community policing

The federal government has inaugurated a committee to study recommendations and implementation strategies on strengthening the internal security framework and community policing in Nigeria.

Home Secretary Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who inaugurated the committees in Abuja on Tuesday, said the journey started with Senior Management Course (SEC) 40,2018 from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), recommendations on strengthening the internal security framework and community policing in Nigeria.

“Therefore, the Committee observed that the absence of a national security policy and strategy document as well as an internal security monitoring and evaluation framework negatively affected the operations of internal security agencies. in the country, which therefore required the President’s directive. to approve an interministerial committee with all the stakeholders concerned on internal security ”to be set up.

Aregbesola stressed that one of the nine priority areas of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is to improve governance and ensure the security of all citizens.

“Therefore, he calls for all seriousness to provide the necessary security apparatus and architecture to combat insecurity in the country.”

A statement from press director Blessing Lere-Adams noted that the committee inaugurated seven sub-committees and their terms of reference (TORs).

Arẹgbẹsọla said: These seven committees are; “The Committee to Develop Internal Security Policy and Strategy with the Minister of the Interior as Chairman.

“Committee responsible for developing a mechanism for effective synergy and coordination between internal security agencies and adopting community policing as a national strategy with the Minister of Police Affairs as chairman

“Committee responsible for developing a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation framework for internal security agents, chaired by the Permanent Secretary of the Interior.

“Committee on the Application of Appropriate Science, Technology and Innovation for Strengthening Homeland Security Management, including forensic satellite imagery, drones, closed-circuit televisions, etc. . Fund with the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Police as chairman.

Committee on Appropriate Devolution of Control of Resources with Homeland Security Agency Chains of Command with the Director General of the National Drug Law & Enforcement Agency as Chairman.

“Committee to Innovate the Funding Mechanism for Upgrading the Equipment of Internal Security Agencies and for Providing the Necessary Equipment to Security Agencies with the Inspector General of the Nigerian Police as Chairman.

Aregbesola also empathetically said: “I do not need to reiterate the seriousness of this mission, ensuring the security of the life and property of citizens is the primary responsibility of the government. It is a mission we cannot afford to fail.

The minister stressed that the recent incident in the penitentiary establishments was no longer an internal insurgency of inmates but a massive armed invasion from outside.

He said: “A new strategy must therefore emerge to meet these new challenges.

“The third concern is community policing.
