宮本武蔵 ―双剣に馳せる夢―
Directed by Mizuho Nishikubo
Synopsis
The film’s story centers on Musashi Miyamoto, one of the most famous swordsmen in Japanese history. He pioneered the Hyouhou Niten Ichi-ryuu style of two-sword fighting and wrote “The Book of Five Rings,” a book that has been compared to Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War” for its insight on tactics and strategy.

the actual title, if it had been translated properly, would be something like 'Miyamoto Musashi: The Dream of Riding with Dual-Swords'.
aside from the blatant and simple fact that Musashi is not at all in any sense of any word 'the last samurai', the dream of riding (on horseback) with dual-swords is a summation of Musashi's ideals throughout his entire life, and the central focus of this documentary film, and not to mention a direct quote from Musashi's own "book of five rings".
and honestly, this horribly translated title is actually kind of hilariously on-point, since the whole point of this film - and of Oshii Mamoru writing this film to begin with - is to combat the rampant misinformation…

I hate when movies turn out to be school educative videos…
But the music and fight sequences were pretty cool -

Musashi Miyamoto’yu ve onun üzerinden Japon tarihi ve yapılanmasını farklı bir tarzda anlatmışlar ve de çok çok iyi olmuş.

An interesting documentary surfing the " reconstitution" trend of modern historical docs (but with excellent animated footage). The theory examined here is enough of a hook (I can't say how badly/well thought it is, of course) and people less informed about the context get the needed infos to follow the lecture. Comedic antics trouble the lesson, so do the (informative) digressions. Those digressions and the duration constraint prevent the movie to be as complete as it could. The little lecturer (Oshii's avatar?) was more a distraction than anything, his role could have been perfectly fulfilled by the usual off-voice.
The OST, despite seeming out-of-topic at times with the use of european classical pieces, was great and never an obstruction to… -

A spectacular multimodal production, written with the pure intent to educate. Made for history fanatics, but to fall outside that niche bracket means to risk any engagement. Simply, not made for me.
